Home At Last

By Sofia Skop

Moments of silence, broken only by the rustle of leaves

Alone in the woods, I feel the icy breeze.
Such a place, one that I can call home
Staying here, I never feel alone.
Alone in this forest, where the fathers once chopped wood,
Can I finally at last feel understood.
Home is warm, and I am safe at last,
Up in this forest I have a blast.
So close, yet so far
Especially since I can finally see a star.
The Cape is close, I can practically smell the sea,

This is the place where I finally feel free,

Safety abounds, I am finally home.

A Promise

Sofia Skop

Can you make me a promise?
Always and forever, no matter what happens to us
Remember the days we spent
Over the biology labs, barely present,
Lost in the world of our minds.

I never thought about what we left behind.
Never forget the ways that we laughed
Even when we had to write that lab report draft.

Stay in my heart
Here, even if we drift apart.
Instead of goodbye
Rather, keep your eyes dry.

Living eternally in that freezing lab,
Eventually the pain of loss will scab.
Yet one day, the sound of my voice you will try to grab.

Don’t lose that kind, wonderful laugh
Remember the days when we tried to graph.
Imagine the way that we would look
Sitting, confused, while Doc C explained that book.
Cold air, freezing our butts off
Otherwise wondering “Why does Will always scoff?”
Let me think that you will always stay honest
Let me think you’ll keep this promise.
