Marymount Manhattan College announced on May 28 that it had agreed to enter Northeastern University’s global university system, pending regulatory approvals. Once the merger is complete, students in good standing will be automatically enrolled at Northeastern University—New York City. Abby Fiorella, chairwoman of MMC’s Board of Trustees, said the decision was made in light of enrollment trends and rising costs impacting higher educational institutions nationwide.
Northeastern University—New York City will continue at MMC’s campus on East 71st Street, becoming Northeastern’s fourteenth experiential learning model campus worldwide. State and federal regulatory approvals will determine the ultimate date of completion.
The Monitor asked Marymount students to send questions following the May announcement. Peter Naccarato, Interim President of MMC responded to the Student’s questions:
What is the timeline of the merger?
“The merger has been approved by the governing boards of both institutions, and the ultimate timing to completion is subject to state and federal regulatory approvals. The timeline for these approvals is not yet certain, but the expectation is that the merger will occur in stages over time.”
How does the merger impact alumni?
“MMC remains committed to providing a quality alumni experience for our graduates that honors our traditions, and we will continue to plan reunions, publish stories about alumni accomplishments, and facilitate important career connections between students and alumni.”
Northeastern is known for STEM – how might this impact MMC arts students?
“Northeastern is committed to further enhancing MMC’s signature performing arts programs.”
How is good standing defined?
“We will be sharing details like these as they become available.”
What is happening to the Marymount Manhattan name?
“Northeastern values MMC’s legacy and plans to preserve and enhance the campus, including the establishment of the Marymount Manhattan Center, which will preserve the history and legacy of MMC, maintain MMC’s unique traditions, and support programs that carry forward MMC’s mission.”
How will this merger affect tuition for MMC students?
“Students who receive automatic enrollment at Northeastern as a result of the merger will not experience an increase in net tuition or fees, apart from annual increases consistent with common practice.”
