The lively placards lulled in the air among floating pink ears, accompanied by the chaotic rhythmic sound of drums, footsteps and chants, all blending with the distant wail of New York City sirens. On the sunny afternoon of Saturday, March 8, 2025 thousands marched down the streets from Washington Square to celebrate International Women’s Day.
The Marchers gathered near the disco ball by the east side of the Park, and following opening remarks, they kicked off the rally. It lasted for 2 hours, from 11 AM to 1 PM. The rally came to an end by the statue of General George Washington in Union Square. From children to elderly, many cat heads were spotted and they all seem to come together in spirit to address, advocate and adjourn the injustice suffered by women. As the current administration tries to erase National Women’s Day from the calendars and targets the trans community, this peaceful rally stands in solidarity with trans sisters to end prejudice and injustice. The Marchers brought along creative cardboard placards that read, “This Barbie Has Had Enough” and “History Has its Eyes on You”.
“I think it’s important to celebrate women’s day because of the attacks women face everyday from the government, the opposite sex, and endless other forces. Women’s day has never been more important in my opinion than now because our government has decided to roll back on rights concerning bodily autonomy. As a male presenting individual, I show up to listen and support rather than speak and or try to educate. I was invested because of my mom who raised three kids on her own. I am invested because I am only allowed the pleasure of life because of the dedication of women,” said MMC student Tristan Arthur’26.
The First National Women’s Day was observed in the US on Feb 28, 1909, on behalf of the women’s suffrage movement that advocated for the political rights of working women. Although the reasons for women’s march may have evolved over time, the spirit of advocacy still remains unwavering. March is a month that is committed towards celebrating women from all walks of life and the US President proclaimed March 2025 as Women’s History Month just days before the march.
