On Friday night, Sept. 12, Marymount Manhattan’s Improv club Off The Dome put on a show that had everyone in the room laughing their heads off. It was a packed house, and with the exciting improv games “Courtroom”, “Weird Newscasters”, “The Comedy Cube” and more, the nine improv actors kept the audience engaged and entertained throughout the entire performance. There was never a dull moment, as laughter and chatter constantly filled the room.
The improv show had many interactive moments. For their first game, Rap in a Line, the audience had to guess what the team member was describing. In Courtroom, one actor, Gwyn Trumbore, walked out of the room, and the audience provided a setting, a character, and a murder weapon for the scene. Then, the remaining actors made an entire story out of it, while trying to make Trumbore guess where she was, who she was, and what her murder weapon was. When she got close to the answer, the audience would snap, and when she got it right, the audience would erupt in applause. The interactive factors of each game kept the audience attentive and involved in the show.
The whole improv crew showed witty humor, talent, and quickness on their feet. Off the Dome is run by their president, Caroline Mack. She is an acting and directing double major and this is her fourth year on the team.
“The best part of being in the group is the community and comedy ensemble [they] create with one another,” Mack said. “I know everyone on the team has my back and I have theirs. We can push each other creatively in improv because of our friendships outside of the group.”
The camaraderie within the team is palpable as they are able to bounce off of each other during every scene. No matter what an actor said, the other actor was quick to respond–there was no hesitation within the team members. The quick-witted responses are what made the show so captivating and impressive.
“I’m so grateful for this group,” Mack said. “It has truly changed the trajectory of my time at Marymount in the best way.”
Off the Dome held auditions on Wednesday, Sept. 17, and they are expecting 12-15 members in total. They do shows every month, and their next show will be Halloween themed on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 10 P.M. in the Regina Perguri Room.
