I don’t always do the same thing each year, but I typically use it as an opportunity to try new foods. Growing up my uncle would make Thanksgiving empanadas, eventually I went vegetarian and tried fun vegetarian pot pies and “meat” loaves. Last year, a group of friends and I went to an Indian Restaurant in the West Village to try something totally different for Thanksgiving. I don’t celebrate the story of Thanksgiving, but I do enjoy it as an opportunity to spend time with people I love and try new food!

Thanksgiving has always been a difficult time for my family and I – we have had very few in good health. So, to cherish the little things and spend time together, we normally just do a small home-cooked thanksgiving meal. My mom and I make two of my favorite things together: cranberries and pecan pie. The cranberries are tart and have less sugar than the recipe says. The pecan pie recipe is newer. We used to have a family recipe but it stopped tasting good, so we found a new one. We always add a teaspoon of bourbon to our pecan pie as well; it makes it taste extra good!
Thanksgiving is full of traditions in my family, so much so that it’s my favorite holiday. My mom and I get up early and watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade together, eating cinnamon rolls while we build our Christmas Lists. Then we watch the dog show while my mom cooks. My mom makes the best Thanksgiving dinner (my favorite being mashed potatoes and lima beans), and then after dinner, my whole family watches Daddy’s Home 2 (we watched it by accident one year and have watched it every year since). I am so grateful that this holiday is a reason for my entire family, including grandparents, to sit around a table and enjoy each other’s company, but I’m especially grateful for the time spent with my mom.
I don’t really celebrate Thanksgiving as I’m over 6,000 miles away from my family in the Middle East. I normally buy takeout from any of the diners near my dorms for Thanksgiving.
I have 2 recipes that my mom always makes for Thanksgiving! She always makes apple pie, with dough in the shape of fall leaves on top of the pie. My mom also makes green beans wrapped in bacon, which is always a hit at Thanksgiving.

Over the last few years, my family has adopted the tradition of playing Scattergories between dinner and dessert! We get into teams of 2 or 3, and it gets super competitive. The first year, it was Thanksgiving themed, but the last few times we’ve just had random categories. It has become a great way to spend time together while letting our stomachs settle!
A fun thing we do for Thanksgiving is wear shirts that have our favorite meals on them!
